An Unexpected Adventure

While the have been many twists and turns in my time as a RAP intern. I think the most impactful was easily the switch to remote work. Having planned for weeks to make the venture out to D.C, this came as a bittersweet surprise to me. Instead of going out into the city and finding my way there, I hunkered down where I was and setup a space where I could be productive in a remote setting. While I obviously wish that I could have met everyone in person, there have been many elements of the remote working environment that have made the experience an enjoyable one.

I am very fortunate to have such a friendly and inviting team in NFS Budget. Coming from ill-natured part-time working environments in college, I can confidently say that this is the first time I have felt like a valued part of a team within a working environment. While I am not able to experience what it is like to chat with people in the office, we make time to get to know each other and celebrate the things going on in our lives. I realized this then the team put together a celebration meeting for one of our coworker’s birthdays and while I wasn’t able to attend, I was still touched by the sentiment of it all. I am surprised time and time again by the level of human connection amongst people that have never even been in the same room together. This whole experience has given me hope and made me eager for a return to normal life after COVID. If the work environment can be this positive through screen, I can only imagine what it will be like when I am finally able to meet people in person.

So while I have previously mentioned my status as a remote worker, I think it is important to reflect on the experience. I know that many would say this is almost the opposite of a true “adventure” but I have still managed to have many new and exciting experiences through the screen in this undeniably unexpected change in my life.
