Andrea’s Introduction Blog

Hi there! I’m Andrea and I’m the new Education and Outreach Intern at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area! I’m excited to join the team here at Newport, Oregon and perform marine education, park interpretation and conduct some seabird research as well. I’m looking forward to seeing all the marine coastal wildlife that I can document through photography and my sketchbook!

I graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a degree in Environmental Systems – Ecology, Behavior and Evolution. During my last year at college, I worked with WILDCOAST to develop a research study on how human use data would affect the shorebird population at a local San Diego marine protected area. This experience highly influenced my love for conducting fieldwork and the bird world! I also enjoyed interacting with the public and I learned a lot from the locals who had witnessed the drastic negative change in tide pools over the past 30 years.

During my time here, I hope to learn how to become a better educator and steward as I believe these to hold significant roles as a scientist. My favorite leisure activities include bird watching, gardening, going on walks and watching Netflix. I’m excited to meet everyone at Yaquina and to explore Newport, the place that I’ll call home for the next five months!
