Stuck at Home, Still Having Fun!

Feather study in my field journal 🙂

This summer, I have had heaps of fun planning and carrying out my programs with the War in the Pacific National Historical Park. From fishing and snorkeling to visiting wildlife refuges on the island, my days have been filled by exciting outdoor activities that bring me closer to nature. I did get sick a few times during my internship, but I did not let that stop me from getting my work done and finding new ways to engage with nature from home.

Magpie study from Estes Park, Colorado
Pair of Marianas crows

I was able to answer emails, work on blogs and presentations, and return phone calls all from the comfort of my room! When I had extra time, I worked on my field journal and tried to identify the bird and fish species I found at my park.

I even went birding in my neighborhood! I found that Mariana crows (Corvus kubaryi) frequented the flame trees across the street from me. Using my binoculars, I was able to take a few pictures of two crows that seemed to be courting each other. The endemic birds were always easy to find — I just had to follow the sound of their song!

Mariana crows singing – turn up your volume to hear them!
