28 Feb Bilingual Preschool Program
One of my favorite things I get to do in this internship is host a bilingual (English/Spanish) preschool program every last Saturday of the month. I get to choose the topic, create the program and of course, have fun with it!
This last program was over mosses and lichens. With preschoolers’ attention span in mind, it is important to not make the programs very lecture-like. For this program I created a picture book with vocabulary words in English and Spanish, we did a little science experiment with dried moss and putting it in water, I created a sensory box with moss, lichens, and other outside things, and of course, we also had a nice walk outside. In addition to the program itself, I do also give handouts. For this class, I gave out a vocabulary list, some extra information on moss and lichens (mostly for the adults), and some coloring sheets with things labeled in English and another one in Spanish.
I have a lot of fun with these classes because I also get to learn with them. I did some research on moss and lichens for this program and I know so much about them now. That is one of my favorite things about giving programs, the opportunity to research a topic I am interested in.
It is also amazing to see kiddos learning two languages. It’s great to see them so eager to learn and amazing to see how supportive their parents are. It also makes me feel grateful to be in the position I am in. I am glad they can have a bilingual teacher and I can be some representation in this field and serve them as a resource and who knows, maybe even an inspiration.
