30 May About Me
Introduction: Avery Guy
Hi, my name is Avery Guy and I’m super excited to be a fish and feathers intern this summer! I will be completing my internship with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. As a fish and feathers intern, I’ll get to facilitate fishing and birding activities within the park as well as learn more about how the park manages their bird and fish populations.
Now a little about me. I am a soon-to-be graduate of Western Carolina University, majoring in Parks and Recreation Management. I’m also a proud member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and I have lived on the Qualla Boundary most of my life. With the boundary located right beside the park, I have spent countless hours swimming, hiking, and exploring much of what the park has to offer. I absolutely love GSMNP and have always wanted to work there, so this internship feels like a dream come true.
In my free time, I love to hike, swim in the river, learn about local wildlife, and play video games. My favorite hike is probably Black Balsam. It’s a beautiful area and has miles of trail. My favorite place to swim is Piney Grove, which is a spot on the Oconaluftee river right in the middle of the boundary and the park. As for video games, I’m currently obsessed with Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Above is a picture I took the last time I visited Black Balsam.
Pictured above is Piney Grove. As you can see, a rope usually gets put up every summer. People use it to swing into the river. It’s so fun!
