The Whiskeytown Saga continues..

Taking in the backcountry

Wow! Where do I start? What a journey it’s been so far here at Whiskeytown. My experience here has been fantastic; lately, I’ve been thinking about the time I left here. The staff at Whiskeytown are so helpful and welcoming that it feels like a second home to me. I’ve had so many fun moments at Whiskeytown, and I look forward to what’s left in store. My favorite moment by far was a WESS hike I recently did for the local summer camp located on-site at Whiskeytown! I got the opportunity to lead a couple of fourth graders on a hike. I was able to educate them on the local bird species and an intro to birding! So many kids were fascinated by Barn Owl prop wing and my bird book and would not stop asking to borrow my birding book- lol. Some, in particular, were so fascinated by birds, and others were asking countless questions that it got hard to reach the end of the hike. Still, I was more than happy to pique their curiosity! Towards the end of the hike, I asked them if they wanted to take a group picture, and they all ran to me in anticipation. It was truly a heartwarming moment.

To new opportunities!

In addition to my first birding hike, I also got to help California Fish and Wildlife with a Creeling survey at Whiskey Creek! I got the opportunity to network with California Fish and Wildlife employees. I even got asked to work a Kokanee Salmon fishing tournament next week to gather more data on their local Kokanee study involving Kokanee Salmon abundance and assessing the health of their population. I was more than happy to help them out. I might even work with the park’s wildlife biologist in his Spotted Owl monitoring at night! Cheers to new endeavors!!!
