11 Jul It’s The Little Things…
I stated previously that the park staff has made this internship unforgettable, but that is not the only thing I have loved being here. This internship has been a fantastic experience for me. Not only do I get the chance to work with the public and show them the nature that I love, but I also get to experience the park. Prior to this internship, I had little knowledge about Indiana Dunes National Park. It wasn’t because I didn’t care; I was off at college, and the park was created right after I left. So I get to work in a park and experience it for the first time, which is wonderful.

I have loved most going out in the park and experiencing it outside of work. This internship allows us to work and teach and explore the parks we are at. I often spend my off days hiking, fishing, or swimming at various locations in the park. You cannot avoid going out when you live 10 minutes from the beach. I take this time to enjoy the park and learn about the area’s ecology through fun little adventures. Even when I am out and about, I still interact and give advice to tourists or those interested in the park. I will definitely be hiking as many of these trails as possible before my internship ends. My favorite so far is the Paul H. Douglas trail which takes you from the rare black oak savannah to the beachfront!
