Behind the Scenes at Cape Perpetua – Ascensy Perez

Welcome back to my blog, everyone! Things have been moving fast here at the Cape, but I can confidently say that each day brings on new experiences that have been better than the last! One of the most unique parts of my experience has been the people I’ve met. A couple of weeks ago, I got to hang out with many other EFTA interns for our training in Leavenworth, WA. Connecting with other individuals over our shared passions and experiences in the field was so insightful, and I’ll remember it for a long time! Outside of our training, getting to know everyone was pretty awesome, and I ended up having a fantastic time.

Similarly, this internship has been incredible because of the people I work with daily. This season is going so well because everyone gets along, and we’ve all found a way to work together despite having different interpretation styles. For the first time ever, going to work is actually super fun! And outside of work, I’ve made great friendships with fabulous people. The pandemic was stressful for me, making friends almost impossible, so I am very grateful for the professional and personal experiences I’ve gained throughout my season.

One of my other favorite parts of this internship has been the opportunities I’ve had to experience wildlife up close. For example, my work doing interpretation with birds has transferred into a newfound love for birding and wildlife photography, so much so that I haven’t left my house without binoculars in weeks. I have also gained an appreciation for animals that I have never even noticed before (mostly bugs), which has made my outdoor adventures even more fun.

All in all, I am so grateful for this internship. I have learned so many things about myself, my goals and interests, some really cool animals, and the people around me. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store!
