What I’ve Been Up To This Summer!

What I've been up to this summer!

By: Victoria Rodriguez

Wow, I can’t believe the summer is almost over! It feels like just yesterday our cohort was strolling through the little German-inspired town in Georgia for orientation. Now, some of us have already transitioned into permanent positions and most, if not all of us, have hit our 960 hours. What a trip!

Here in the New Employee Experience program, summer has been pretty busy. We’ve been putting on our regularly scheduled onboarding webinars for new employees, learn and grow gatherings, and campfire chats. They’ve been such a success and seem to be gaining a lot of traction. There’s also been a lot of interest and attendance at the national new employee orientations! Just last week, I helped my colleagues host the week-long orientation that was geared toward east coast new employees. Now we’re getting ready to host another one next week for our west coast friends! On top of all this, our team is gearing up for a retreat in August under the Office of Development and Culture (ODC). Oregon here we come!

Sorry it's a little blurry! I hosted my first Learn and Grow Gathering with Samuel Wu who is co-chair to the Greening Fire Team.

I also have a few side projects going on. One of them is sort of a two-part project. Much of the onboarding material for new Forest Service employees is outdated, so I’ve been cracking away at taking inventory of what’s available, what needs to be updated and or discarded, and then currently making those updates. I’m primarily focusing on onboarding videos and the new employee guidebook which should align and go hand in hand. I’ve also been lucky enough to be part of preparing and planning for an upcoming Equity Summit, the first of its kind in the Forest Service, taking place this fall. This is supposed to be a huge deal as the Forest Service is truly showing their commitment to making the Forest Service an equitable, inclusive, and inviting place to work. It has been such an exciting journey to be a part of and I can’t wait to see how it all comes together!

Other than that, I’ve just been trying to stay cool in the Denver summer heat. Stay hydrated everyone!

Till next time!

Enjoying some watermelon in my home office to keep cool!
