04 Aug My Summer at Niobrara NSR by Leona
This summer, I enjoyed exploring a new place and learning new things! I hosted four fishing clinics, four bird walks and led bird-themed activities at a summer camp. I got to canoe on the river every weekend and participate in piping plovers and wildlife surveys. I improved my communication skills by interacting with people from various age groups and backgrounds. I learned many new things from my coworkers since we each went to school in a different field; there was a treasure trove of knowledge to be shared. The office environment at my park was so friendly I immediately felt welcomed and became good friends with my coworkers throughout the summer.
I loved canoeing on the river because of how beautiful the river was and how many birds I could see while floating by. I got to add many new birds to my life list, which is exciting. My favorite new bird that I saw this summer was the upland sandpiper because they are just really cute and goofy looking. While floating, we got to talk to other people floating down the river, and it was fun to learn where different people were from and what brought them to Nebraska.

I had fun running junior angler fishing clinics at various locations. We had a fishing clinic at Valentine State Hatchery, Keller State Park, the Norden Chute, and Cub Creek State Park. The kids caught different fish species, including largemouth bass, rainbow trout, bluegill sunfish, and channel catfish. It was fun seeing how excited the kids would get when they caught a fish and how happy they were when it was their first-ever fish.

Overall, this summer was a great experience. I accomplished my goals of exploring a new place and learning to identify different species of birds than I am used to. I also achieved my goal of improving my communication skills and teaching conservation principles to kids. I improved my career skills for my future in wildlife conservation, and I am thankful that I had this opportunity to grow.
