Bat banding plays a pivotal role in unraveling the mysteries of these enigmatic nocturnal creatures and advancing our understanding of their ecology, behavior, and conservation. By affixing uniquely coded bands or tags to individual bats, researchers gain valuable insights into various aspects of bat life. This includes tracking population dynamics and movements, studying migration patterns, observing complex behaviors within colonies, and unraveling reproductive ecology. Furthermore, bat banding contributes to disease monitoring efforts, aids in formulating effective conservation strategies, and fosters educational outreach to raise awareness about bats’ ecological significance. Ultimately, bat banding is instrumental in revealing the intricate details of bat lives, facilitating their protection, and promoting the overall health of ecosystems they inhabit. I was given the opportunity to attend a bat probiotic visit with Kim Veverka.

Here, we were putting up the mist nets for the bats to safely fly into. After the bats flew into the net, the bats were carefully removed by experts, put into a bag to process later.
There were two location in the house where mist sets where set up. The side that Kim and I were on only caught three out of forty- three bats we needed to process.
Bats were processed by writing down their wingspan, age, band number, etc
The bats wing is expanded in order to apply the band. The band is applied loosely as to not stress the bat.
