During the month of March, I had the privilege of making my way up to Ogden to attend the Intermountain Sustainability Summit. This is annual event held at Weber State University presenting on current sustainability efforts and accomplishments within Utah. Topics ranged anywhere from composting, permaculture, and household water conservation initiatives. Although some of these topics may not seem pertinent to climate and sustainability in the Forest Service, it’s all about perspective, I recently learned that 69% of the waste produced at lighting camps for wildfires is due to catering supplied waste. This is an instance where learning about current composting initiatives in Utah could benefit the USFS in mitigating our impact in lighting camps.
