24 Apr Another Month Surviving America’s Last Frontier
Hi everyone,
Since last month, my time in this internship has been fun. I have had the ability to network with colleagues from the district and different departments, and have gathered a better understand of what life would look like if I continued and became an arch tech. So far, the goal of records management has been really rewarding. I am working with a coworker from this internship as well on records, and her name is Hanna. When you are working with it becomes so rewarding. Hanna and I have become close by working with one another, and the ability to for a sense of community has been amazing. I have learned so much history around region 10, and about the forest service. It has been incredible digitizing forest service history, such as some of the first forest ranger reports from region 10 in the 1900’s and understanding how the forest service operated under tough time in US history.
I have an upcoming training with most of the heritage team across region 10, which entails for 4 days learning about a new database that all regions are using across the forest service are currently using. Being able to connect with colleagues I have only met on zoom will be rewarding, and getting to learn their insight on the heritage program in the district they work. I am excited that safety week for my district is next week, so I will be able to learn more about wilderness survival and bear training, which is incredibly important to have in Alaska, and two weeks after that, I will be in first aid training at the regional office. I am currently enrolled to go do some field work for the heritage team in May and June; and am looking forward to getting a full demonstration on how archaeologists work in the forest service. Dealing with records, I am now incredibly familiar with the paperwork that many in the heritage field have to do, and I am excited to see what other responsibilities may hold.
