24 Apr Spring in Juneau!
March is over, but winter is still sticking around in Anchorage! My dogs are genuinely delighted by the winter wonderland, but the rest of us hope to see bare ground soon, or at least in time for the field season! The Chugach Heritage staff were able to get a break from the deep snow for a week at the start of April to attend NRM database training at the Region 10 office in Juneau (Photo 2 large building behind totem pole).
The crocuses bloomed in Juneau despite the rain and periodic snow. It was a welcome site that confirmed spring is on the way! The training was a deep dive into the Forest Service NRM database and mapping software with an in-field component. The field version of the database is still in development, so the entire Region 10 Heritage staff from the Tongass and Chugach forests were able to provide suggestions to the developers after testing the tablets in the field and in the rain, which is a given when you do fieldwork in Alaska!
It was wonderful to meet the entire heritage team and be an ancillary part of field planning for the summer. I also enjoyed walking around Juneau as its deep historic roots are apparent in the numerous examples of Alaskan native art dotted between early 20th-century buildings, all surrounded by steep mountains and the ocean. It truly was a memorable trip!
