Chasing Monarchs

Hello, my name is Brittany Hutchinson and I just medically retired from the Army, and this is my first blog. I’m a field specialist/intern with Environment for the Americas. I’m so grateful for this opportunity and I’ve had quite the journey so far. I started in Oklahoma at Fort Sill, but it was too early so the following week I went back down to Fort Cavazos, Texas where I saw my first monarch! Ironically it was after we had completed the activity, and I was putting my things away in my vehicle, and low and behold out of the corner of my eye I saw a huge butterfly. I was so excited, and everyone got out of the vehicle, and we found milkweed around this area that was a part of a construction work site after all milkweeds do like disturbed areas. The monarch quickly left the area and we stopped to look at the milkweed this was also the first time I saw an egg. I’ve also had the pleasure of traveling to Laughlin Airforce Base and we saw a few monarchs as well as a lot of milkweeds with eggs and my first third instar. I’m looking forward to traveling and seeing more eggs, instars, and monarchs on my journey North.
