Prineet Anand – Fish and Feathers Intern Introduction

WHO am I?

Hi there! My name is Prineet Anand, and I’m from Katy, TX (West Houston). Currently, I’m a rising junior majoring in bioenvironmental sciences and minoring in both ecology & conservation biology as well as business at Texas A&M University!

Some of my hobbies include playing basketball & tennis, watching boxing (huge fan), MMA, American football, playing the drums (marching snare drum more specifically), herping, birding, and wildlife photography (more on this later)! I’m also trying to get more into reading for fun, and I’m currently indulging in a book called Birding Under the Influence: Cycling Across America in Search of Birds and Recovery by Dorian Anderson.

The earliest memory I can attribute my love for nature to is when my dad showed me, a very grumpy baby at the time, a Gulf Coast Toad that was presumably lapping up moths on our front porch. He told me, “everytime it hops, you have to gulp down a spoon of your food.” Being so eagerly captivated by this Dorito-sized ball of energy, I wolfed down my meal and jolted towards it to quench my curiosity.

I soon started to watch amazing wildlife shows such as Wild Kratts, River Monsters, The Jeff Corwin Experience, Austin Stevens Adventures, Wild Recon, and of course, the Crocodile Hunter. I also consumed a hefty amount of books, reading field guides on herps, birds, and anything in between for fun By the age of 11. I’m fortunate enough to have been able to get off of my couch and TV screen to explore wildlife and scenery in various countries such as Costa Rica, India, and Ecuador just to name a few.

My passion and love for the natural world has skyrocketed to a more career-focused initiative in the environmental world where I hope to pursue a career in either environmental consulting or academia.

Currently, I’m an avid birder who has been birding for almost 2 years now. I’ve seen nearly 615 bird species in 6 countries, and am constantly trying to observe and identify new bird species. While I’m often birding, I often carry a camera to try and get inspiring natural shots of animals. If you want to see some of my work, check out @prineetanandphotography on instagram! Some of my favorite birds (pictured below) include the Blackburnian Warbler, ‘Akohekohe, Asian Emerald Cuckoo, and Heart-spotted Woodpecker.

What Will I be doing this summer?

This summer, I have the utmost privilege of working at Rocky Mountain National Park as a Fish & Feathers interpetation intern with Environment for the Americas. I hope to lead my own bird walks and drastically improve my fishing skills. It’s my first time living outside of my home state of Texas, so I know that adjusting may take some time to get used to. However, I’m determined to grow in multiple areas and make to most of my time here!

I hope to also be banding birding at the YMCA of the Rockies with experienced avian biologist Scott Rashid during my free days. I have so much to learn, and I can’t wait for the opportunity to pick at his brain. Apart from this, I hope to get to know this part of the Rockies like the back of my hand and ensure that I can help inspire, educate, and create beautiful moments for people to relish and cherish forever!
