04 Jun All About Keweenaw National Historical Park

Keweenaw is unlike any other national park that I have been to. Keweenaw county, otherwise known as Copper Country, is best known for its stunning views of Lake Superior, but it was previously most famous for its booming mining industry. The Keweenaw peninsula is home to one of the largest lava flows on earth, so Copper Country was an appropriate name. Copper mining was HUGE. It was so huge that Calumet, home of KNHP, had the population density of Manhattan at the time. Crazy right?

KNHP is relatively small, but it makes up for its size by having several heritage sites. These heritage sites are places where more of the history can be explored, and include museums, lighthouses, natural areas, and former mines (yes, you can go in them)! I already love this park and the history behind it, and being only 10 minutes away from the Lake Superior beaches doesn’t hurt either.
