Jada Gruwell – Fish and Feathers Intern Introduction

Who am I?

Hello there!

My name is Jada Gruwell. I am from Minnesota but have been living in Florida for the last three years. I obtained my bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of West Florida last year. Currently, I am enrolled at Bemidji State University, pursuing my master’s degree in environmental studies. My current main academic interest is environmental justice. This came from a project I participated in at UWF, and I hope that I will be able to pursue a similar environmental justice project at Bemidji State.

Outside of school, I love hiking and fishing. Ever since I was young, I loved being outside and watching animals, whether that was the birds soaring through the air or the caterpillars crawling on the grass. It was, and still is, calming in a way that nothing else can replicate. I have many fond memories of fishing with my extended family, enjoying a cool breeze and waiting patiently for fish to bite. As I grew older, this love for the environment transformed into a desire to protect it for all people to enjoy equally.

This summer, I will be interning at the Gulf Breeze National Seashore. Fort Pickens, one of the sites for this park, was the first park I visited after moving down to Florida! I was instantly enraptured by the stone walls, almost hidden between the ground, and the mysterious structures I couldn’t identify that covered the park. Before my internship, I had been to the park several times, and even convinced my family to come too. When I happened to stumble upon the Fish & Feathers listing for Gulf Breeze National Seashore, I knew I had to apply.

While at the park, I will be primarily performing nature interpretation programs, including a fishing and a seashore program. I will also be involved with a kayaking program, which is rather exciting considering I have kayaking experience from my time up in Minnesota. I am eager to learn more about the environment and animals that live down here. I am much more familiar with Minnesota’s ecology than Florida’s, so this opportunity will be priceless for me. The history here at the park is also very fascinating and will be valuable for me to learn and become acquainted with. I am excited to get started and get out there, interacting with the public!
