05 Sep Meet EFTA’s Standout Intern Bloggers!
Celebrating the Best Blogs and Standout Digital Communication from Our 2023/2024 Interns
In today’s digital age, effective communication is essential for launching any career. This year, our Environment for the Americas (EFTA) internship program has revealed some amazing talent in digital communications! Our interns have been sharing their insights and experiences through engaging blog posts that showcase their work, and the valuable lessons learned during their internships. Their writing, ranging from scientific observations to personal anecdotes, has greatly enriched our understanding of conservation, our national parks, diversity in conservation, and our shared natural world.
The EFTA internship programs focus on connecting people with nature and promoting a future of conservation that is inclusive, accessible, and diverse. Our interns collaborate with partners such as the National Park Service and Forest Service, engaging in hands-on conservation projects. This year, we’re excited to showcase some outstanding interns who excelled in digital communication and blogging!
Congratulations to Emily Wright – Fish and Feathers Internship Best Blog Winner
Emily Wright has been awarded the Best Blog Winner for her outstanding contributions during her Fish and Feathers internship. Her blog posts are a delightful blend of creativity, vibrant images, and unique storytelling. Emily’s ability to transform her experiences into captivating narratives has earned her this well-deserved recognition.
During her internship, Emily was instrumental in organizing four “Fishing Discovery” programs and four “Fish with a Ranger” initiatives. These programs provided participants with hands-on fishing experiences and covered different fishing-related topics.
Another memorable event was the Sea Lamprey show at the Porcupine Mountains, where she collaborated with Fish & Wildlife and DNR/Porkies staff. Emily also led a nature walk on invasive species and looks forward to a fly tying and fly-fishing program at Fort Wilkins. Through her internship, Emily not only deepened her knowledge of fish and fishing but also gained invaluable life lessons. Her gratitude for the opportunity to live in such a remarkable place and connect with amazing people is evident in her heartfelt blog posts.

Angelica Wu – GOGA Standout Digital Communication Award Winner
Angelica Wu, a Habitat Restoration and Plant Monitoring Intern, has been recognized as the winner of the Standout Digital Communication Award for the 2023/2024 Golden Gate National Recreation Area intern group. Her blogs, filled with colorful photos and engaging stories, have captured readers’ attention and highlighted her strong communication skills.
In her latest blog post, Angie talks about her experience monitoring rare plants in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) this past late spring. She shares how important these surveys are for the park management in protecting sensitive species.
Angie also shared her monitoring trip to Nicasio Ridge, a grassland habitat known for its rare plants. Despite challenging conditions—thin, nutrient-poor soil and heavy metal presence—that hinder most plant growth, some unique species have adapted to thrive there.

Sophia Britto and Alison Munaylla-Bohorquez – Mosaics in Science Standout Communications Winners
We are proud to announce two winners for the Standout Communications award under the Mosaics in Science program. Sophia Britto from Glacier National Park and Alison Munaylla-Bohorquez from Mount Rainier National Park have both demonstrated exceptional communication skills through their blogs.
Sophia Britto – Glacier National Park
Sophia Britto, a Science Communication Assistant, has made significant contributions to the media team at Glacier National Park. Her professionalism and innovation in digital communication have resonated well with the park’s audience. In her blog posts, Sophia shares unexpected lessons learned about the park’s wildlife, weather, and natural features.
Sophia shares her experiences with various animals, such as marmots, beavers, bats, pikas, mountain goats, moose, foxes, loons, woodpeckers, bighorn sheep, hummingbirds, and deer. She talks about the unexpected snowfall in June and the chilly “June-uary” cold snap. Sophia also recounts her exciting whitewater rafting adventure on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River, noting its beauty and power.
Alison Munaylla-Bohorquez – Mount Rainier National Park
Alison Munaylla-Bohorquez, a Biology Assistant, has been recognized for her outstanding social media communication skills. Her poetic blogs and stunning photographs provide readers with a vivid experience of Mount Rainier National Park. In her blog post, Alison describes a hike in the park, focusing on the search for rare plants, particularly Arnica rydbergii.
The hikers start at the Sunrise Visitor Center and ascend Sourdough Ridge towards Mt. Fremont and Burroughs Mountains. Along the way, they discover various rare plants, including Sedum rupicola and Rhodiola integrifolia. The hikers also explore a social trail, highlighting its potential to damage vegetation and disrupt sensitive habitats. Overall, the hike offers a rewarding experience, with stunning views of the park and valuable insights into rare plants and conservation efforts.
