29 Aug Rainy Morning at Walden Ponds
Hello, my fellow birding friends. For the first time in my EFTA internship, my event took place during a rainy morning.
I went to Walden Ponds on Saturday. I was tired because it was foggy, and the sun was not out. I woke up, we got ready, and we went down to eastern Boulder County. Because it was raining, I did not know if there would be any birds out there.
But of course, the birds did not disappoint. I was happy to see many birders underneath the pavilion.
Our patience paid off. We spotted approximately fourteen birds on that chilly, wet morning. What a nice surprise!
We saw barn swallows directly after the rain slowed down. Then we saw a couple of Canadian geese and they were squawking at each her. They sounded like a car horn.
Next, we spotted a hawk on a power line and he did not look happy. He might have been trying to get his breakfast and eat something.
Some other birds we observed together were:
Say’s Phoebe
Broad Tailed Hummingbird
Wood ducks
European Starlings
And a Double Crested Cormorant
We wrote all these down on a white board and I used my Merlin app and the Ebirds app on the phone to help identify their songs.
It was so much fun and it was cool meeting other bird watchers. I met one person from my home area of Longmont. They was cool to talk with, because they told me where I can find more birds. I also met other birders.
The Boulder County parks staff brought equipment to help with the event. It was fun looking through the long lens telescopes we borrowed. The long lens equipment helps me see better.
It was a really good experience. I did not know about how many birds are there at Walden Ponds. I might lead my own bird walk there soon or on my own with friends.
I want to say thank you to the parks staff for giving us brochures, checklists and the 50th anniversary enamel pen. How cool!
