Intern Introduction: Joan Tomokane

Fish, Feathers & Finding Wonder

Hafa Adai yan Tirow, and welcome to my little corner of the world.

My name is Joan, and this page is where conservation, creativity, island community and random cool nature facts all collide into one. I’m a born and raised Saipan native, where the ocean is basically a part of your personality and a love for nature has crept into every fiber of my being.

You’ll definitely be hearing more about my island in the next few blogs to come, but for now I’ve linked a map to the right of this little tangent for your viewer convenience. And as you can see, I was quite literally born on a little dot in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Don’t be fooled though, little islands make big hearts and even bigger personalities.

From a young age, I’ve always been interested in the natural world around me- whether that’s learning about the variety of fruit trees that we grew at my family’s house or asking my grandma about the åmot (medicinal herbs) that she would collect near the village church on early summer mornings, love for the environment is rooted deeply within me.

Before Fish and Feathers there was KUPU. (See pictures to your left.)

Another lovely internship that I had the privilege to serve under for about 2 years. As a KUPU member I did lots of environmental outreach and education with an amazing team (shout out to the lovely ladies and gents of American Memorial Park!).

Working alongside the Park Rangers and getting to teach my community about the importance of caring for our environment has been nothing short of a blessing. I am and will forever be grateful for the time I spent as a KUPU member.

However, sad as it is, all things must come to an end.

And with that… new beginnings!

Now, it’s out with the blue and in with the beige!

I’ll be working at the same park with new tasks, a different title, and a fancier uniform. Making little me proud every step of the way. I am so excited for the work that I’m about to do as a Fish and Feathers intern, especially now because I have an audience to witness the oddity and grandeur that is me, Joan. It may get a bit chaotic at times, but I pinky swear we’ll have a blast.  So, whether you’re here because you love conservation, the environment, island life, or you just accidentally clicked on this page… welcome.

Let’s go do some cool stuff.

Life is a journey to be experienced, not a problem to be solved.

Si Yu'us Ma'ase! Ghilissow! Thank you!
