Event Highlight: (Everyday is) World Migratory Bird Day Celebration!

For this blog I want to highlight one of my my recent events that I am the most proud of. This was my ‘(Everyday is) World Migratory Bird Day Celebration!’ held at the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center on August 22nd.

This was event that I fully planned, prepared and lead with the help of some of my lovely coworkers and supervisor who offered to help man the stations. At this event we offered information on how to help migratory birds through their migrations, ways that we can help through participation in community science (anyone can be a scientist!), interactive activities such as a bird quiz, Oregon Coastal Birds bingo, and a beak adaption game where visitors were able to test and see how different beak shapes help birds feed on their specific diets.

The event finished with a guided hike led by myself along the Captain Cook Trail. On this bird walk we listened for the different song birds in the forests and practiced using our binoculars to spot various sea birds resting on the waves and rocks along the coast line. Highlighted species we saw included White-winged scoters, Brown Pelicans, and a few Double Crested Cormorants!

I was so happy about this event not only due to visitor turn out (75 interpretive interactions at the tables, and 20 people on the guided bird walk) but because it brought me so much joy to see so many people wanting to learn and excited to share the knowledge they already had!

This was a special event for me as well because I was lucky enough to have family and friends trek out to coast to support me and join in on the fun!

Until Next Time... See ya on the flip side nerds!
