Waiting For the Wings: Fall Monarch Season Begins!

Starting Of The Fall Monarch Season

It’s so crazy to believe that it is already time to get started on another monarch season! After spending the summer out of the field, I am so excited to be back and see what this fall season and migration has in store. I am especially excited to get back outside, explore the landscape, and start looking for monarchs, instars, and their eggs!

The beginning of the fall season in Texas has been a little slower than we hoped. After a long hot summer, with little rainfall, a lot of the plants we look for have been slow to return. Because of this there has been less milkweed and a lower diversity of blooming nectar plants available for the monarchs and other pollinators. While this can be a little discouraging to see this slow of a start, it also makes every new bloom and plant we find that much more exciting!

Now, we are waiting for the most exciting part of the season: the monarch migration! As the monarchs begin their journey south toward their overwintering sites in Mexico they will make their way through Texas using the available resources along the way. I am looking forward to watching the landscape change as more plants begin blooming, and hopefully, more monarchs make their way through the area.

And of course, I am really looking forward to when we start capturing and tagging monarchs! It will be so exciting to see the monarchs up close and tagging them, knowing that the information we collect can be used to help other researchers learn more about their migration! Each monarch we tag is a small part of a big story that we stand to still learn so much more about.

There is still so much of the season ahead of us and I am so excited to see how things change over the next few weeks. From searching for milkweed and nectar plants, to spotting monarchs, and eventually getting the opportunity to tag them, I’m looking forward to sharing the fall season and everything I get to experience!

Here’s to the start of another migration season!
