Join Environment for the Americas and special guest Ruth Bennett, a leading ecologist from the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, as we explore how to create bird-friendly cities and communities.

Ruth Bennett specializes in enhancing biodiversity conservation in tropical forests and agroforests. As the lead scientist behind the Smithsonian Bird Friendly certification, she works to improve both conservation and human outcomes by conducting cutting-edge biodiversity and socioecological research, collaborating with industry partners, and fostering coalitions that promote market-based conservation strategies.

Before joining the Smithsonian, Ruth earned a PhD in Natural Resources from Cornell University and an MS in Applied Ecology from Michigan Technological University. Her passion for migratory birds and coffee farming systems began during her time as a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras, and it continues to inform her work today. Ruth partners with scientists and landowners across the Americas to protect migratory and resident bird species in tropical working landscapes.
