Meet the Team

Alicia King, our seasoned Book Club host, will be your Environment for the Americas’ guide on this unforgettable adventure. Her passion for books, nature, culture, and bird conservation will add an extra layer of richness to your experience. She will join Joni Ellis, the Director of Optics for the Tropics, who brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in tropical birding, Cuban culture, and conservation in the country.

The Cost

$2,500 covers all in country transportation, meals, lodging, birding guides, a driver, and entrance fees, as well as tips. You are responsible for flights to Miami and then Cuba. your visa, other travel within the United States, drinks other than water (alcohol, etc), extra suitcases and overweight suitcases. A second payment of $1,000 is due on December 15th, and the final $1,000 is due January 15th.

Our Focus

Our 8-day trip is uniquely designed for curious conservationists, interested birders, and amateur ecologists who want to interact meaningfully with a variety of Cuban nature specialists, biologists, historians, and artists and give support to Cuban civil society. Conservation and Conversation come together to deepen our understanding of Cuba and the Cuban people. We will engage in light hiking in protected areas with our Cuban friends who work in the private sector of conservation and avian research. We will also sample the new trends in creole and international cuisine with Cuba’s growing cuentapropistas (small, independent businesses).

Draft Itinerary

Our travels will take us to Gibara, Baracoa, Humboldt National Park and other national protected areas. More complete details will be provided in December.
