Position Description:
The civil engineer trainee will assist the Forest Engineer and Engineering Team in design and implementation of infrastructure projects, abandoned mine land remediation projects, and orphan well plugging projects with a variety of partners. The civil engineer trainee will perform one or more of the following duties as development toward a higher-level position:
- Makes topographic and alignment surveys of selected projects.
- Uses surveying instruments and directs party members.
- Prepares field notes.
- Assists in preparing topographic and detail maps.
- Transfers field notes into detailed drawings, develops preliminary trail gradients, prepares design data forms, computes project quantities, and transfers these quantities and final gradients to plans.
- Makes design calculations and prepares specifications for selected portions of projects for forest development facilities including roads, trails, water and wastewater facilities, buildings, bridges, culverts and other engineering facilities.
- Assists in inspecting construction projects for adherence to approved plans and specifications.
- Determines compliance with respect to dimensions, use of designated materials, progress of work, etc.
- Makes preliminary road locations and tests road surfacing material, gathers data for maintenance surveys, participates in inspections, makes boundary line surveys and performs a variety of other duties for work experience and training.
- Performs other assignments to broaden knowledge of Forest Service activities in areas such as timber, fire, recreation, wildlife and/or business management.

Responsibilities:
- Assist in planning, designing, and inspecting infrastructure projects
- Conduct topographic and alignment surveys with surveying instruments
- Prepare field notes, create topographic maps, and convert them into detailed drawings
- Perform design calculations and specify project details
- Provide engineering support to timber, fire, recreation, wildlife, and /or administration.
- Assist Forest Engineer and Engineering Team on infrastructure, mine land remediation, and well- plugging projects
Qualifications:
Major studies relevant to this position: Engineering or Architect. Knowledge of basic professional civil engineering principles and concepts sufficient to apply standard engineering practices in limited phases of survey, design, construction, and/or maintenance projects. Skill in expressing thoughts both verbally and in writing is required to document and report on technical aspects of work.
