Position Description: Law Enforcement Interns will work alongside a sworn full-time U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement & Investigations employee whose primary responsibilities are public safety and the protection of federal lands/natural resources that are administered by the U.S. Forest Service. Law Enforcement Interns will assist assigned mentor with various projects and assignments related to the protection, enforcement, and investigation of crimes committed on Forest Service lands. Interns will interact with other federal, state, and local law enforcement partners as well as other first responders and be subject to a fluid environment. Day-to-day duties and responsibilities will vary according to location and the nature of various calls/assignments of the mentor. Selectees will be expected to comply with all direction given by mentor to ensure a safe environment at all times. Selectees will be expected to learn about the enforcement and protection of natural resource laws and how to become a successful law enforcement officer as well as learn about the various disciplines within the Forest Service. Selectees will be assigned a training plan that will be monitored and evaluated by the mentor.

Natural and Physical Work Environment: Selected interns will be subjected to various outdoor environments and physical exertions. Interns should be able to walk/hike in mountainous terrain. Interns could possibly be exposed to various forms of transportation to include all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), boats, utility terrain vehicles (UTVs), etc. as deemed necessary by the mentoring officer to safely perform the duties of the day.

Education and Qualifications: Applicants are required to have either recently graduated within 2 years or be currently enrolled full-time at an accredited U.S. college/university and pursuing or possess a Bachelor’s degree in a Criminal Justice-related or Natural Resource-related field. Degree completion must occur prior to any potential conversation into a full-time position. Applicants must be able to pass a criminal background check and submit to an initial and periodic random drug test. Applicants should be physically fit and able to pass the Physical Efficiency Battery Test (PEB) at the 25th percentile prior to conversion into a full time positions as a condition of employment. Please visit PEB scores for age and gender to determine applicant’s minimum requirements. The PEB consists of flexibility, bench press, 1.5 mile run, agility run, and body fat percentage calculations. Interns must be willing to relocate anywhere within the U.S. based on agency needs if converted into a full-time Law Enforcement Officer at the successful completion of the internship period. Interns selected for conversion into a full-time Law Enforcement Officer position at the conclusion of the internship will be required to attend the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) and must successfully complete a 17-week basic training program (Land Management Police Training) and a 3-month field training program.

Abilities and Skills: Applicants should possess the ability to work in team settings as well as in rural areas. Applicants should be able to work in various outdoor settings, including mountains, lakes, rivers, and other dispersed areas. Applicants should be very outgoing and able to interact with various ethnic/racial groups.
