Location:  Kernville, CA

Position Description: The Recreation Resource Assistant (RA) will work on recreation management with the Kern River Ranger Districts. The RA will participate in the recreation program assisting forest staff with special uses administration, recreation site maintenance, coordination with fire/timber and other functions, recreation utilization analysis, volunteer/partner coordination, and wilderness and trails management/maintenance. The position will be working with both personnel from Kern river Ranger District and the duty station in Kernville, CA.


  1. Gather, compile, and recommend improvements for recreation sites on the unit.  Serve as inspector on service projects ensuring work is completed
  2. Assists in performing surveys and studies of existing dispersed and developed recreation facilities and their present use and demand.
  3. Potential work includes: grant management, researching, coordinating and writing.
  4. Work with partner organizations and universities to organize events and interpretive programing.
  5. Maintains and cleans developed sites, roadside and/or backcountry dispersed sites.

Natural and Physical Work Environment: The RA may be required to travel and work in remote locations on the forest, independently, and in teams. Fieldwork and administrative work in an office required. Driving on and navigating forest roads and hiking may be required. Requires working throughout the day in high temperatures and exposed to thesun.

Located in Southern California, the community of Kernville is a popular summer destination for recreators. The area is a haven for recreational enthusiasts in California due to the proximity of a wealth of outdoor recreation year-round, ranging from white water boating, camping, hiking, biking, climbing, four-wheel driving, picnicking, horseback riding, hunting, and fishing. Kernville offers a range of facilities to its residents, including restaurants, a museum, shops, and a brewery. The town of Lake Isabella is located 15 minutes away and offers a large grocery store. The town of Bakersfield is just a one hour drive and offers various supermarkets, convenience stores, gyms, and specialty stores located within the communities.

Education and Qualifications: Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree in Botany, Ecology, Education, Forestry, Geography/GIS, Natural Resource Management, Outdoor Recreation, or Wildlife Biology

  • Direct experience conducting arduous field work and working as part of a team in a remote setting (required)
  • Direct experience interacting with the public in a customer service role (required)
  • Experience working in an outdoor setting during summer months
  • Experience using and creating GIS maps
