Project Description:
- Collect forest measurements including tree species, height, diameter at breast height (DBH), crown and canopy characteristics, age, disease and mortality information, etc.
- Identify ground cover and canopy cover percentages based on determined boundaries.
- Service and maintain field equipment and electronics including Loggers and transect tapes, increment borer, laser range finder, high precision GPS, etc.
- Assist with post-processing of collected field data including plot access descriptions, travel directions, site characteristics, data anomalies, ownership information, etc.
- Assist with travel and logistics planning, corresponding with landowners and obtaining permission to access the owner’s property.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to conduct arduous field work as part of a team in a forest setting: standing, crouching, bending, kneeling for sustained periods of time, in high heat for extended periods of time.
- Basic experience corresponding with members of the public, including landowners and stakeholders, in a professional manner, via email, phone, or in person, and using proper speech, grammar, and etiquette.
- Background or education in natural resource management, urban forestry, or ecological sciences is preferred but not required.
- Ability to learn on the job the use of standard forestry hardware and technological equipment including data recorders, GPS units, laser range finders
- Background experience using Microsoft Office programs is preferred.
