Project Description:

Seeking a RAP Intern to serve as a program specialist to manage outreach activities for underserved communities. The candidate should have an interest in a variety of work experiences. This position will provide the candidate with working on independent projects involving information synthesis and writing; participating in conference calls and meetings with various staff and partners. The incumbent is responsible for planning, developing, and executing the Urban Outreach Program for a target city. The incumbent maintains constant interface with the public and the Urban and Community Forest Program as well as other branches of the USDA and other federal, state, and local agencies surrounding target urban areas with responsibility for the urban areas, to collaborate on urban initiatives. Facilitates a core outreach team for urban areas and works alongside a steering committee. Conducts internal work sessions to identify opportunities and build commitment for needed resources, and ensures that regional and national issues are addressed by city teams. Facilitates the integration of minority views by helping teams reach underserved communities in the urban arena. As program advocate, works with other USDA branches and other federal, state, and local agencies surrounding target cities to build awareness of the needs and interests of urban constituents, and to provide the forests advice and counsel on options for reaching out to them. Serves as a central source of information on urban outreach. Maintains constant interface with regional and Urban and Community Forestry Program staff to best integrate urban outreach with other events and initiatives. Plans and organizes major special events such as public affairs campaigns to increase the quantity and quality of communication with urban audiences. May also work on other public affairs campaigns as assigned. Campaigns may include message development, media outreach, large-scale project development, special event planning, and general outreach. Works with the target city on national media outreach in urban areas. On a continuous basis, the incumbent is responsible for defining the primary customers served and negotiating expectations with these customers about the services provided. The incumbent is responsible for contacting customers to solicit feedback on performance and suggestions for how quality and service can be improved. Evaluates the results of feedback and studies and make recommendations. Independently identifies complex program issues or problems in programs of small scope. Makes recommendations for and coordinates resolutions and improvements. In support of the region-wide integrated approach to addressing resource management issues, may be called upon to work as a team leader or as a member of a team charged with achieving particular goals and objectives or addressing specific issues. Teams are cross-disciplinary and are established to ensure intra-agency collaboration and cooperation.

Skills and Abilities:

Must have a valid driver’s license • Must be 21 years of age or older • Must have proof of Covid Vaccination • Knowledge of business operations, communications, program management, meetings management, and coordination • Must be proficient in data analysis and interpretation • Computer skills in MS Word and MS Excel • Strong oral and written communication skills • Must have skills and knowledge in using social media and other digital platforms as a communications tool


Bachler’s degree in all Majors. Public Affairs; Government Relations; Social Sciences Business Operations, Business Communications, Project Management preferred.
