Project Description:
The U.S. Forest Service’s Washington Office-National Forest System is seeking a Resource
Assistant (RA) Fellow to work in the Wilderness and Wild and Scenic Rivers (WWSR) programs within Region 4 at the Salmon Challis National Forest.
- The WWSR Fellow will have an opportunity to make important contributions and gain valuable experiences through collaboration with multiple interdisciplinary staff areas, agencies, and nongovernmental partners that are critical to the success of these two programs.
- The WWSR RA Fellow will work as a ‘Natural Resource Specialist’ at the GS-07 level, depending on education and previous experience.
- The fellow will have the unique opportunity to focus on a variety of projects across the Salmon Challis National Forest, the Regional Office and the Washington Office.
- The RA will work with staff at District, Forest, and Regional, and Washington Office levels to complete a variety of projects focused on management of Wilderness and Wild & Scenic Rivers, Diversity Equity and Inclusion, interpretation and education, training development, and other natural resource management needs.
- This will require assessing current programs through research and meeting with staff, field site visits, facilitating meetings to gather input from multiple resource areas and partners, and developing products to share findings. The RA will gain a better understanding of how the agency approaches partnerships, education, working with diverse communities, and promoting training for WWSR work.
Qualifications (include knowledge, skills and abilities):
- Knowledge of basic natural resource management
- Knowledge of interpretation and education practices
- Skilled in verbal and written communication and Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Ability to multitask in a high-paced environment as part of several high functioning teams.
- Ability to be self-driven, motivated and organized in a virtual work environment
- We are looking for a candidate who is passionate about improving public awareness about wild places and healthy rivers, and the mission of the Forest Service; wanting to gain exposure to partnerships, interpretation and education, national environmental policy and management issues; a strong communicator, both as a writer and speaker; enjoys working with a variety of internal and external partners and community members; and is willing to work hard to learn professional skills in a team setting. This person should also feel comfortable working in a wilderness setting for multiple days at a time.
Direct Hire Authority (DHA)
All RAP interns receive Direct Hire Authority (DHA) at the successful conclusion of their internship. DHA status enables an agency to hire, after public notice is given, any qualified applicant. A DHA expedites hiring by eliminating competitive rating and ranking, veterans’ preference, and “rule of three” procedures. For more information, please click HERE.
